One of my favorite ways to make our home cozy and welcoming, and to feel like a super homemaker;) is to make sure our house is smelling good. Whether its with candles, an essential oil diffuser, some from scratch baking, or a stove top potpourri, a good smelling house is a must.

Our home is pretty old, and doesn’t always smell great naturally, so I try to constantly remember to have a diffuser, potpourri, or something else going. Its especially important to me if I have guests coming over!

I love that the change in seasons brings a completely different change in smells. Incorporating seasonal smells into your home is such a fun way to embrace each season as it comes.

What Is a Stove Top Potpourri?

If you’re not familiar with stove top potpourri, let me fill you in on what it is before we jump into the recipe! Stove top potpourris are basically just a hodge podge of fresh fruits, herbs, spices, (occasionally dried flowers) that’s simmered on the stove in water.

As its simmering the stove top potpourri puts out an amazing scent of the combined ingredients. Potpourri is is just the dried version of the fruits, herbs, spices, and flowers. Stove top potpourri is the simmering pot version!

One of my favorite things about stove top potpourris is that you can just use whatever you have on hand. Although this is a recipe with exact ingredients, don’t be afraid to mix it up and just use whatever you have! You could honestly just use a couple cinnamon sticks and it would still make your home smell wonderful.

I also think stove top potpourris are a great way to use up anything in your kitchen that’s about to spoil. If that apple is right on the edge of going bad (too close to eat), then throw it in some water on the stove.

We have an apple tree and although I try to pick and use as many of the apples as I can, some do go bad. Also, some are just not great for eating because they’ve been picked are bruised, etc. I’m so happy I can still get a little bit of use out of them by throwing them into this potpourri recipe!

Fall Stove Top Potpourri Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1 orange
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 Tbsp cloves (ground or whole)
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Slice the apple, orange and lemon. Combine all of the ingredients into a medium sized sauce pan on your stove. Cover with water. Simmer on low all day!

This recipe is especially nice if you have guests coming over. Get it started in the morning and have it simmering all day to make your home smell amazing.

Add more water as needed throughout the day so the ingredients are always covered in water. You can also keep this on your stove for a few days straight, and just turn the heat on again in the mornings. Just be sure to check it often and add more water so that it doesn’t run out of water and burn to the bottom of your pan!
