Florida State Opera at Florida State University College of Music is dedicated to serving the professionally oriented student, the musical and scholastic life of the University, and the cultural vitality of the immediate geographic area.

Responsibilities

This position focuses on the administrative and operational activities of the Opera area at the College of Music.

  • Works closely with the Opera Stage Director, Technical/Scenic Director, College of Music Fiscal Office, and other production personnel to manage scheduling, financial activities, personnel, and other operational functions of staged opera productions.
  • Manages the day-to-day functions of the Opera area at the College of Music.
  • Responds to electronic and phone correspondence during business hours and ensures the Opera office is staffed appropriately (with consideration given to the unique scheduling demands of production and rehearsal schedules when determining office hours).
  • Monitors office inventory and places orders as needed.
  • Oversees OPS office personnel and crew members, approves timesheets, and initiates paperwork associated with personnel actions.
  • Works with Voice & Opera faculty to develop and maintain coaching schedules, rehearsal calendars, and rehearsal reports.
  • Ensures all fully staged and Outreach Opera productions are presented professionally and adhere to best practices.
  • Ensures stage management needs for opera productions are met and provides managerial support for rehearsals and related opera area performances as needed.
  • Serves as production manager for all opera productions, acting as liaison among the Stage Director and the Director of Opera, scenic and costume staff, accompanists, and guest artists to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
  • Provides key production planning and problem solving. Implements and advises on production timelines throughout the academic year.
  • Works closely with the College of Music Fiscal Office to facilitate departmental transactions.
  • Develops production and area support budgets in conjunction with Director of Opera and Assistant Dean for Finance & Administration.
  • Advises production staff regarding available budgetary resources and monitors purchases.
  • Serves as a PCard (purchasing card) and TCard (travel card) holder on behalf of Opera.
  • Serves as PCard Proxy for all Opera area cardholders.
  • Prepares all guest artist (including but not limited to conductors, coaches, directors, and scenic/costume/lighting designers) arrangements to include travel, housing, and Letters of Agreement.
  • Serves as travel representative for Opera faculty, staff, and students.
  • Facilitates communication and cooperation between the Opera area and College of Music as a whole.
  • Provides front-line customer service, engages with internal and external stakeholders as well as the local Tallahassee community, and serves as a highly visible representative of Opera and Opera Outreach programs at FSU.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four years experience related to cultural arts services; or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to eight years.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in a related field.
  • Knowledge of operatic repertoire.
  • Work experience in a professional opera environment.
  • Experience ensuring the safety and welfare of the cast and crew during rehearsals and/or performances.
  • Knowledge of and experience with production logistics.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines.
